Fentanyl is not “just another opioid page”

Inland Empire families now say fentanyl when they used to say heroin or “pain pills.” The powder is stronger, often mixed, and the timeline is less polite than an old textbook opioid chapter.

This page is not a copy of our opioid guide with the word swapped. It exists because admissions calls from Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ontario keep naming fentanyl specifically — and because a hospital may still be the right first stop.

What to Expect

We ask what was actually used, whether naloxone has already been needed, and whether other depressants (alcohol, benzos, xylazine if known) are in the mix. Mixed depressants change safety. We will not pretend a residential house can replace an emergency department for overdose or unstable breathing.

Acute opioid withdrawal is miserable and usually not the same seizure profile as alcohol. People still become dehydrated, sleepless, and hopeless enough to leave too early. Around-the-clock residential staff are there for that stretch. Medication for opioid use disorder, if appropriate, is a decision for independently licensed healthcare professionals. We do not prescribe buprenorphine or methadone.

If someone is still using daily, has overdosed this week, or cannot stay awake, start with 911 or the nearest ER. If they are stable enough for a car ride and a residential bed is open, call (909) 287-1444.

Discharge planning after fentanyl often means a faster handoff to ongoing treatment than families expect. We will not call a five-day stay a complete recovery.

Support During Your Stay

• Individualized assessment that names fentanyl and any known adulterants.
• Around-the-clock residential staff support.
• Coordination with licensed healthcare professionals when appropriate.
• Referral to a hospital or higher level of care when residential care is not enough.
• Counseling and recovery education after the worst physical days.
• Continuing-care planning — including programs that offer MOUD if a clinician recommends it.

Naloxone is not a treatment plan
