The honest split
Commercial PPO and many employer plans can cover residential detox when a reviewer agrees it is medically necessary. That is a benefits question plus a clinical question. Our team runs a true verification with name, date of birth, carrier, and member ID.
Medi-Cal coverage for residential SUD treatment in California generally runs through the county Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System. That is RUHS Access, San Bernardino County DBH, or OC Health Care Agency — not a form on our site that “approves Medi-Cal.”
What verification is (and is not)
Verification tells you deductible, copay, out-of-network issues, and whether the plan even has a residential detox benefit. It is not a guarantee of payment for every day of a stay. Plans re-review.
We do not finance treatment. We do not need you to sign a loan to hear whether a card is likely to work.
Sober living is usually a different bill
Google’s related question — who pays for sober living in California — is often answered with “cash, sometimes a scholarship, rarely the same benefit as detox.” Do not assume a PPO that covers residential detox will pay for a house with a chore chart.
What to bring on the call
The physical card or a clear photo. Date of birth. A second coverage if there is one (Medicare Advantage plus a wrap, two parents’ plans). Whether anyone is already in an ER — that changes urgency and sometimes the payer.

Questions
- Does insurance cover detox?
- Often yes for commercial PPO when detox is medically necessary and authorized. Medi-Cal uses the county DMC-ODS process. Call for a real check.
- Will you tell me my exact out-of-pocket on this page?
- No. Anyone who publishes a fake “100% covered” number is not looking at your plan.
